BLAME GAME

BLAST FURNACE US STEEL 1984 – WRAPPED IN STEEL DOCUMENTARY FILM

I read a post this morning that blamed the decline of a working class neighborhood on the Southeast side of Chicago on “the progressive socialists.”  I have no idea who these “progressive socialists” are, but let’s continue.  These progressives, many of whom appear to be minorities, are somehow responsible, as far back the 1980’s, for the closing of the steel mills by their corporate owners like US Steel, who closed their mill in South Chicago, and started buying steel from China, while investing in Marathon Oil.  All of this, the post claimed, is the fault of immigrants and minorities who feel “entitled” to things not named. “Things” that the writer of the post believes that minorities and immigrants are not entitled to get. Seems like the same kind of rhetoric used in the 2012 elections.

During the recent Presidential election the twisted mantra of entitlement, in some form, was promoted by all the right wing Republican politicians, which means the entire Republican Party.  A party now pretending to try  to figure out why  they lost the election  so badly. Pretending to want to reinvent itself to appeal more to Latino and Asian immigrants (they don’t seem to mention African American citizens very much). They talk  about how they can get their message over to people, sugar coat it, so minorities and others will vote against their own best interests. Republican surrogates talk about having Senator Rubio, the Cuban American Senator from Florida, go out to pitch Hispanics, as if they were some monolithic group who would automatically vote Republican because there was one Latino politician pitching them.

Republicans, including Ronald Reagan, have used the technique of turning working class white people against minorities of all persuasions. First they take away jobs that white working class people have and then blame minorities and immigrants for taking those jobs. Republicans promote racial and ethnic animosity to Americans who are predisposed culturally to this tendency. Republicans have taken over a block of southern states building on the civil rights movement that did away with segregation.  The voting rights act was used to  further anger white southerners who had been suppressing minority voting up to that point. Midwestern and Northern working and middle class whites have been taught to fear minorities.

Democrats may have won the majority of the battles in the current election cycle. But as far as the Republican party is concerned this is just one battle in a war that has been going on for a very long time. For Republicans and their plutocratic puppeteers this is a war of attrition. Plato must have had Republicans in mind when he wrote about a cave where prisoners are chained to a wall so they can only look in one direction,  unknowingly seeing only shadows, cast in front of a fire by puppeteers they cannot see. The prisoners perceive the shadows cast on the wall as reality.

Democrats must organize and prepare for the next election cycle. Credible candidates need to be found to run against tea party and far right leaning  obstructionist politicians in the senate and congress. Democrats should help the President explain the Affordable Heath Care Act and other achievements of Democrats and the administration.  The  Republican propaganda machine is at work every day trying to win over anxious and frustrated Americans in any way possible.  Democrats need to counter this with a campaign that promotes facts and reality to counter the propaganda and lies.

The Republican Party of today is not the party of moderate conservatives it once was.  It seems many of those moderates have become “Blue Dog Democrats” or centrist, conservative Democrats.  Even though the cable news pundits don’t talk about it, the coalition that elected the President for both terms, included a sizable number of middle and working class white voters.  This includes men, women and younger voters. The President and others down ticket could not have been elected without white voters. The press and others by failing to describe the Democratic coalition of voters properly are playing into the hands of the far right who will make it seem that the Democratic party is the fabricated reality of “minority and immigrant progressive socialists.”

History’s Magic Mirror

This article posted on the Truthout Blog is well worth reading.  It covers, in part, the scary direction in which the United States is headed. Interestingly the Tea Party and other right wing groups have been running around projecting the kind of fascist government they knowingly or unknowingly support.  Even if President Obama is reelected it may only slow up this far right agenda. Well worth reading.

History’s Magic Mirror: America’s Economic Crisis and the Weimar Republic of Pre-Nazi Germany

Thursday, 01 November 2012 13:35 By Charles Derber and Yale Magrass, Truthout | Op-Ed

Germany’s economic crisis of the 1930s led to the rise of far-right populism and the Nazi Party, fueled by the corporate and military establishment. An American version of this “Weimar Syndrome” could emerge as the far Right closes its grip on the Republican Party.

Contrary to common wisdom, the ascendancy of the Tea Party, Christian fundamentalist, militarist, anti-feminist, anti-immigrant and other racially-coded right-wing elements in the Republican Party – that could gain preponderant influence over the nation in a Romney/Ryan Administration – is not new. It is the most recent example of the “Weimar Syndrome,” where liberal and Left parties fail to solve serious economic crises, helping right-wing movements and policies – that lack major public support, but are groomed and funded by the corporate and military establishment – to take power.     More…

President Obama Has Succeeded

At the Democratic Convention this year President Clinton emphatically stated that no one, not him nor any other President could have fully turned the economy inherited by President Obama in four years. The economy was bleeding profusely in 2008 and 2009. Despite obvious organized political obstruction from the Republican Party from day one of his administration, President Obama has managed to not only stop the hemorrhaging, he has turned the economy around and we are experiencing slow but steady growth that is gaining momentum.

Unemployment numbers have dropped to 7.8 percent. The housing market is turning around, consumer spending is up, the auto industry is doing well again, the stock market is higher than ever, the affordable health care act is helping people including those from various levels of the middle and working classes, we are producing more oil and gas domestically then in the previous administration, developing wind and solar and women can look forward to equal pay for equal work to name a few of the Presidents achievements domestically.

President Obama’s foreign policy has brought the United States back into the community of nations.  We are no longer hated around the world. We are out of Iraq and working on getting out of Afghanistan. We are working on diplomatic initiatives around the world rather than rattling swords.  Terrorism against this country is being thwarted worldwide; Osama Bin Laden is dead.

So the question is why are many Americans so cynical about this President?  Why would they even consider changing administrations for some vague plans offered by the Republican Candidate? Why vote against their own best interests? Why all the vitriolic rage and hatred on the part of some people who know little about the government and politics. It makes no logical sense even if you think of it as a basic ideological difference between Democrats and Republicans up until now.

If you look back to the 2008 election you will find the seeds of the hatred. The haters and the “birthers” did not believe that a mixed race person, an African American, could actually win the presidency. They thought everyone really thought as they did in racial terms. When President Obama actually won they went into a psychotic frenzy of hatred and fear.

The far right, the neo-cons, the billionaire establishment, plutocrats and national aristocracy saw an opportunity to get back the government they had controlled under G W Bush. Even before President Obama took office the Republican politicians in Washington had a meeting with a Republican lobbyist and strategist.  In this meeting they vowed to do everything possible to obstruct and make this a one-term presidency.  This effort began with a push to get control of the congress in 2010.

Part of the strategy was to do everything possible to demean, stir fear and fan racial animosity against the President.  The “birther” movement was encouraged to continue to question the Presidents birthplace.  Others continued to accuse him of being a Moslem.  The cable right-wing propaganda machine, known as Fox News, cranked out daily conspiracy theories and lies about the President. It is important to note that Fox News is owned by Rupert Murdock who is far to the right and the paper is run by Roger Ailes who’s history as a Republican strategist and media consultant is well known. The latest strategy is to have business owners warn their employees not to vote for President Obama, like they are going to close down their businesses, and stop making money, cut off their noses to spite their corporate faces.

The Affordable Health Care Act was turned into a whipping boy. Republicans are always against any type of social legislation but this time they were being paid in massive campaign donations to fight this legislation tooth and nail. Whether they were able to defeat the legislation or not was not the most important objective. The goal was to link the Presidents name to failure and incompetence.  The same thing is evident with the stimulus bill and the rescue of the auto industry. The fact is both the stimulus bill and the auto industry rescue worked.  The stimulus bill would have been more effective if Republicans in Congress had not watered it down.

Listen to all the things Republicans complain about and you will find legislation they filibustered, voted against or watered down to stop from improving the economy. The President tried bi-partisanship at every turn. He proposed Republican ideas and they shot them down. They became the party of “NO” to everything the President proposed. Their only goal was “to make President Obama a one term President.”  Screw the country and the economy. Make everyone suffer so they will vote against Obama.

Despite all the right wing maneuvering President Obama has succeeded. Given a second term with Democrats in a majority in congress, he will move the country forward. The economy will improve and jobs will continue to grow. The far right establishment doesn’t care about the mess that will be created by reverting to policies that failed under G W Bush. They are more interested in controlling the government of the United States. President Obama represents middle class control of the country.

There is another important reason to reelect President Obama.  The person that won the Republican nomination for President, Willard Mitt Romney, is a potential disaster for this country from a number of standpoints.  His record, as a one term governor of Massachusetts is not a good one and it has been misrepresented by his campaign. His business experience was about making money, “harvesting investment opportunities,” not building anything. Romney is not a team player he’s a boss. A rich kid who got to be a Bishop in the Mormon Church, a possible conflict between church and state.  A rich kid who had to start life with only a million dollars and work is way up from there. It has been said that Americans need to decide if they want a President or a Boss.

ROMNEY’S DISDAIN AND CONTEMPT FOR AMERICANS

Romney’s Disdain and Contempt for Ninety-nine Percent of all Americans.

By J R Martin

It has been clear for anyone scratching off a bit of the facade worn by Willard Mitt Romney, Republican Presidential Candidate, who he really represents beside himself. Funded by billionaires and begrudgingly supported by the radical Christian fundamentalists, both of whom he has tried to hide, Romney has left no doubt now about who he represents and that he has only disdain for the majority of Americans. He mentions 47% that he dismisses as freeloaders. The other fifty-two percent he doesn’t like very much either but he needs them to use for his political ambitions. He only cares about himself and the rest of the one percent he considers himself to be included.

All of this proven in a recently released video, http://www.motherjones.com/ by Mother Jones. This video was secretly recorded at a Romney fundraiser held by Marc Leder in Boca Raton on May 17, 2012. Leder is a controversial private equity manager who has been a long term friend and supporter of Romney.

At the fundraiser, Romney replied to a question about how he would deal with certain types of voters.  His answer recorded both with video and audio was:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it, that that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax…  My job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

Who are the forty-seven percent?  Could they be the 22 percent of people who didn’t owe income taxes who are elderly people on Social Security? Seventeen percent who are students, disabled people or the unemployed? Perhaps sixty percent of the group are low-income workers, many of whom qualified for the child tax credit or the earned income tax credit. (These workers did pay payroll taxes for Social Security and other programs.)  And maybe the 4000 people earning over a million dollars who also paid no income taxes in 2011, perhaps the very people who Romney was addressing in that room?  The people who paid $50,000 each to attend the fundraiser.

I believe about fifty-three percent of Americans voted for President Obama in 2008. I doubt that forty-seven percent of them paid no income taxes. So it is Romney who is promoting “class warfare.”  Romney continued on speaking at the fundraiser about his strategy to get the other six percent of voters to vote for him:

“Those people I told you—the 5 to 6 or 7 percent that we have to bring onto our side—they all voted for Barack Obama four years ago. So, and by the way, when you say to them, “Do you think Barack Obama is a failure?” they overwhelmingly say no. They like him.” — Romney

Romney talks about how they will claim that Obama is a nice guy but not up to the task to appease the emotional side of the five to seven percent of voters they want to win over to vote for him.

It has always been a Republican strategy to try and convince working people, blue collar and white collar, that somehow other people are using them, living off the taxes they pay, on welfare or getting food stamps. They try to make it seem as if all these people are minorities, which is not true.  In hard times more non-minority people are on welfare and food stamps than minority people. This strategy is one aspect of getting working, middle class people to vote against there own best interests. “Divide and Conquer.”

It is misleading to talk about middle class people making under two hundred fifty thousand dollars per year when the mean salary for working people is more like $35,000. Here you have Romney donors dropping $50,000 to attend a fundraiser when many middle class people would love to make that much in a year.

Romney is a liar and a total fraud when he appears in public. In private he is an arrogant, unapologetic, probable billionaire (if we could only see his tax returns for more than a partial year) who represents the minority of super wealthy; the oligarchy that wants to control the United States. He pays lip service to the tea party and Christian fundamentalist because they control the Republican Party.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOCUMENTARY FILMS AND PROPAGANDA FILMS

Joseph Goebbels – Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda – Germany WWII

Currently there seems to be confusion in the media about what is a documentary and what is propaganda. When I hear a broadcaster on NPR or pundit on TV news call an obvious propaganda film like “Obama’s America 2016” a documentary it makes me think of the propaganda films the Nazi Party in Germany put out against the Jews.  Those played in theaters too!  Far right-wing groups, with a political agenda, whose purpose is to attack  the President of  Untied States to help current Republican candidate Willard Romney, financed this propaganda film.  A quick look at the preview for “Obama’s America 2016” on You Tube makes it obvious that the film is propaganda. I guess anyone who watches Fox Fake News on cable TV is into propaganda and may enjoy paying to see more of it.

I wonder if people in the media even know the difference between propaganda and documentary. They seem to not understand that an advocacy documentary  says what it’s subject and point-of-view are up front and then explores issues surrounding the topic. Whereas propaganda  hides it’s true intent, inventing fictional realities while pretending to be nonfiction.

Michael Moore makes advocacy documentary films. He does not make a secret of the fact that he has a liberal or progressive point-of-view.  His films explore the issues and show opposing viewpoints. Opponents of his advocacy positions have tried to call his films propaganda. But there is a big difference between advocacy and propaganda.  Michael Moore’s documentaries do not start out with trumped-up accusations and an undisclosed agenda. His documentaries look at facts that are substantiated by reality not ideology or politics. Political action groups or secret wealthy donors do not finance Michael Moore’s documentaries. Moore’s work does not include unsubstantiated theories by unknown sources. He does not use racist or ethnic “dog whistles” to demean anyone. His documentaries explore issues and ask questions in an attempt to reveal truth.

Most serious documentary filmmakers do not get involved in making propaganda because its purpose is to manipulate people into believing a biased or skewed idea presented in a fake, mock documentary style. Propaganda distorts reality and/or promotes an ideological, political or religious point-of-view.

Propaganda Definitions:

Propaganda distorts and skews reality, actuality and facts to present an alternative reality that is false.

Propaganda promotes a bias that a government, political party, religion, cause, or ideology espouses, showing only one biased and usually hidden agenda.

Propaganda seeks to manipulate the viewer by altering actuality with untruths and distortion to create a reality favorable to whatever ideology or cause it favors.

It’s unfortunate that the news media and the public have generally lost the ability to distinguish between “spin” and facts; between hardcore propaganda and documentary based on actuality and facts.

Elizabeth Warren Email

Elizabeth Warren

There are a lot of campaign emails flying around cyberspace these days. But this one written by Elizabeth Warren, running for the Senate in Massachusetts, struck me as one that I wanted to share. Chris Christie maligned Democrats and government while also stating how wonderful it was that his father was able to use the GI bill to get a college degree! Social legislation like the GI Bill, Social Security, Medicare, Health Care Reform,Pell grants and aid to education are all things Romney/Ryan and Christie now want to do away with. If have any doubts read the Romney/Ryan budget and read the Republican Platform documents they are trying to keep secret.

J R Martin

Jim —

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gave a speech tonight at the Republican National Convention about the Greatest Generation.

Let’s talk about what really made the Greatest Generation so great.

Coming out of the Great Depression, America was at a crossroads. The future of our economy — and our democracy — was at stake.

We made a decision together as a country: To invest in ourselves, in our kids, and in our future. For nearly half a century, that’s just what we did.

And it worked. For nearly 50 years, as our country got richer, our families got richer — and as our families got richer, our country got richer.

And then about 30 years ago, our country moved in a different direction. New leadership attacked wages. They attacked pensions. They attacked health care. They attacked unions. And now we find ourselves in a very different world from the one our parents and grandparents built. We are now in a world in which the rich skim more off the top in taxes and special deals, and they leave less and less for our schools, for roads and bridges, for medical and scientific research — less to build a future.

Tonight, Chris Christie and the Republicans told the American people that we’re to blame for our broken economy. He told families to tighten their belts. He told seniors to live on less. He told teachers to stop fighting for fair pay.

He never, ever mentioned how much more the richest have taken, and he had no mention that those who broke our economy still haven’t been held accountable.

The Republicans believe in an America that is rigged for the big guys — giant corporations that can hire an army of lobbyists, ship jobs overseas, and take their profits to the Cayman Islands.

That’s not who we are as a people — and that’s not the kind of country we want to be.

We built America together, and that’s what makes America great.

Elizabeth

Facts Not Fiction About Romney/Ryan Plans For Medicare and Social Security

Voting Against Your Own Self-interest – The American Way?

Have you ever wondered why people vote against their own self-interest?  In many respects perhaps they can’t “see the light for the trees.” The trees are all the lies and distortions that one side puts up that seduce voters into focusing on ideas that they might like to, or are predisposed to believe, but are not true. One side playing on the known conscious and unconscious fears of prospective voters.  This tactic is not new, it has been going on forever in the United States.

It is a well know fact that the Republican party has always had the dismantling of social programs as one of it’s goals. Social Security and Medicare are at the top of the list.  They make no secret of it. But when it comes to election time they change the rhetoric.  They say they want to “reform and save” Medicare, but the real plan is to destroy it. Their plan to save Medicare is to “privatize” it by turning it in to a voucher program that would by default limit benefits.  By the way, a voucher is not cash. The voucher money would all go to private health insurance companies for limited coverage.  Remember G.W. Bush and his plan to “privatize” social security. Imagine what would have happened to the privately invested retirement funds in the stock market crash of 2008! Privatizing Medicare, the goal of the Romney/Ryan plan would inflate the cost of coverage and increase the deficit by $109 billion in ten years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

At the moment the Romney/Ryan campaign is putting out one lie after another regarding Medicare. Outright false statements are their stock and trade. They try to obscure reality with a barrage of lies. They say that changes would not effect current recipients or those close to retirement. This is not true since any change like giving out vouchers will result in the weakening of the current system. Once Republicans get their hands on Medicare it will effect everyone. Republican plans would push Medicare into insolvency because they want to overturn laws that keep it solvent! Again their goal is not to save or reform Medicare, it’s to destroy it.

There is no “raid”  on Medicare by President Obama. What he did was cut wasteful handouts to Health Insurance Companies. He eliminated avenues for fraud in the system. That savings is used to create more benefits for Medicare recipients in the Affordable Health Care Act (Obama Care).  The Romney/Ryan plan takes $716 billion from Medicare and uses it to finance tax cuts for the wealthy.  It’s in the Ryan Budget!  So Romney/Ryan are attacking the President with obvious lies to muddy the waters and confuse voters. It’s the Karl Rove tactic of attacking the other person and accusing them of your own faults.

According to the New York Times, “In reality, the $716 billion [from Medicare going to the Affordable Health Care Act] is not a cut in benefits but rather the savings in costs that the Congressional Budget Office projects over the next decade from wholly reasonable provisions in the reform law.”*  Romney/Ryan and the Republican Party have pledged to overturn the reform health care bill.  Overturning this bill will drive up the cost of health care for all seniors especially those with higher prescription needs and disabilities. The $716 billion, a cut also proposed by Romney/Ryan, will cut benefits and the money goes to reducing taxes for the top one  percent.

Romney and Ryan are both millionaires from wealthy families. Their policies benefit themselves, their extended families and the very rich. If elected, they will do what they said they would do before they tried to disguise it with campaign rhetoric and false accusations against the President, his administration and Democrats.

President Obama and Democrats traditionally support Medicare as an important commitment of non-changing benefits to seniors.  Democrats also support no changes to Social Security. What ever age you may be, the rock solid government guarantee of benefits for retirement provide a safety net for all. Contrary to Republican propaganda neither program is near bankruptcy. With the kind of well meaning reforms Democrats initiate these programs will continue to provide the type of support that most civilized counties of the world provide for their citizens. Countries as big as those from Europe and as small as Central American countries like Costa Rica.

Destroying Medicare is just  one priority of the Romney/Ryan far right Republican agenda. They support killing the minimum wage, destroying any form of collective bargaining, deregulation of all financial institutions, elimination of Pell Grants, pushing student loans back into the private sector, and cutting taxes for the super rich like themselves. Republicans don’t stand for small government either with programs for state and federal governments to control the rights of women in all ways. Every state where Republicans got control in 2010 has enacted (or tried to) laws that subjugate women and attempt to stop certain groups of people like students and minorities from voting.

Ask yourself, will Republican polices make my life better or will they destroy the middle and working class way of life in this country? We all like to think we will be among the super rich one day. In actuality the Republican agenda closes the door to upward mobility. Without Democratic social reforms, financial regulation and government incentives for small business, building and maintaining  infrastructure, capitalism turns into totalitarianism by the super rich and major corporations. We end up in the Great Depression again.

WHY WILLARD “MITT” ROMNEY WON’T RELEASE HIS TAX RETURNS

NO PERSON WHO REFUSES TO RELEASE AT LEAST TEN YEARS OF THEIR TAX RETURNS SHOULD BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. NOT RELEASING MEANS THEY ARE HIDING SOMETHING! THIS IS CALLED A CONFLICT OF INTEREST!

Romney has released a partial return for 2010.  That’s it.  He keeps saying he’s going to release two years but put his return for 2011 on extension so he wouldn’t have to release it.  Extensions usually go to the end of August, but you can request an additional extension.  Of course if you end up owing taxes you will pay interest and a penalty usually.

Romney won’t release past years returns because he has something to  hide.  It’s not difficult to figure that out. If he didn’t have something to hide he would have released them.  He’s arrogant enough to believe that he doesn’t have to release the returns and that he can still be elected President. He puts his haughty wife on TV to make the point that they are above the average person and play by their own rules.

The fact that he pays little or no taxes some years is not the biggest issue. What he’s trying to hide is all the shady tax shelters and income he has and where it is. It’s clear he’s taken advantage of the tax code in anyway possible and stretched the “legal” as far as it can go. Not releasing his past returns also will show how he lied about income from Bain Capital. There’s a lot more that will come out if he releases the returns. If he does not release ten years of returns including 2011, he should not be President of the United States. We the people need full disclosure.  Imagine if it were anyone else, like President Obama, who refused to release their tax returns!  The Republican base would be ready for a revolution!!

Romney’s ethics and practices are questionable? The American public deserves to know who they are electing to be President. Has anyone asked Romney for his birth certificate? It’s possible he could have been born in a polygamous Mormon colony in Mexico, where is Grandfather moved to escape US laws prohibiting polygamy.

Mitt’s 13% Tax

Friday, August 17, 2012 Mitt Romney says “every year I’ve paid at least 13 percent [of my income in taxes] and if you add in addition the amount that goes to charity, why the number gets well above 20 percent…”

IT’S NOT “THE ECONOMY STUPID”

Article and Photograph by J R Martin

The “economy” is where it is today because of factors that began in the Bush/Cheney administration over an eight year period causing a budget surplus to turn into a huge deficit, unemployment to rise, and involved the country in two wars. The United States  sank into a major financial depression triggered by banking industry malfeasance. In 2012 the economy is slowly healing despite the unyielding efforts of the Republican Party far right radicals, Neo-Cons and others to obstruct any policy that would help the country heal faster.

President Obama has succeeded despite this adversarial, partisan climate to not only avoid a long term depression in the US, but to also create over four million jobs, save the US auto industry, reduce unemployment and end one of the wars. His landmark achievement, a progressive bill to reform healthcare, has been totally misrepresented by the far right and then used against him.

Opponents of the Affordable Health Care Act and other accomplishments of President Obama have adhered to the propaganda axiom that recommends taking someone’s strengths and turning them against them. In recent months the radical right, the Romney campaign, Fox Fake News and Republican politicians have even tried to take the elimination of Osama Bin Laden under Presidents watch and turn it against him using alleged leaks about the mission afterward.

The attack on the President is amplified by “framing” positive accomplishments in a negative light. Of course this makes it difficult for the person being attacked to showcase his administrations accomplishments. Every trick in the book has been used to destroy not only the economy but the President himself with countless personal attacks, overt and “dog whistle” racism, not to mention demeaning rhetoric never used against a President of the United States.  The President is essentially a moderate Democrat but his adversaries try to “frame” him as “socialist” who is somehow foreign. Everyone knows the President was born in the US but the Republicans support “birther” nonsense to spin the Presidents credibility in a negative way.

Is the economy as bad as it’s made out to be?  Is the “economy” the only standard by which we judge the success of our democracy? Should we take to heart all the predictions of gloom and doom put out by economists who all have different theories of what is needed and what should be done “to turn the economy around?  The “economy” is turned around and making slow by steady progress against the head winds of partisan obstructionism. We don’t have a “do nothing congress,” we have “do nothing Republicans” stopping congress from doing anything. Now we have a presidential candidate who’s only plan is to go “back to the future” and repeat what didn’t work before? A candidate who is getting advice from Dick Cheney!

As far as the barrage of negative predictions and reporting by media pundits and bombastic radio personalities there is a self-serving tendency to stay negative in order to prove themselves right. Even when there is positive news it is spun or framed to favor their point-of-view. For example, when a “Jobs Report” comes out stating the fact that say, 250,000 new jobs were created, it is reported as ONLY 250,000 jobs were created. It could also have been reported as ” 250,000 new jobs were created, continuing the trend of new job creation each month for the past 24 months.” There is very little original thinking in the media industry. A new development reported in the New York Times, ends up being reported or misreported by Broadcast, Radio and Cable shows. The negative spin on all economic and political news is like a virus that has reached epidemic proportions.

We live in an era of instant gratification. We want everything to happen now. We are told that what took eight years to destroy should take a year or two to recreate. Progress is being intentionally held back by forces who don’t give a damn about the economy. billionaires are set for life, why would they care if the economy is bad while they achieve goals that have to do with ideology, power and control? Goals that in the long term will make them even richer.

Using all sorts of fear tactics the billionaires backing Romney have convinced a large number of people that the government is their enemy except when the billionaires candidates are in power. But the actual reality is that in every State where the Republicans gained control in 2010 they have enacted laws in which their state governments restrict the rights of citizens in many areas including the right to vote, women’s health issues and the rights of working people, especially in the public sector. They campaigned on creating jobs. In fact they have eliminated jobs, refused federal stimulus money and hampered commerce in their own states.

This upcoming Presidential election is not about the economy it is about whether the United States will remain a democracy of and by the people, with majority rule deciding issues. It’s about the middle-class surviving and flourishing or being reduced to working for minimum wages.

We voted for President Obama because the Bush/Cheney polices that favored the very rich were hurting the country. Bush/Cheney wars and tax cuts ruined the economy. Cheney’s “crony capitalism” (connections with Haliburton and the oil industry) gave billions of dollars away in government contracts which often didn’t deliver the goods as ordered.

Now we have Romney the  “vulture capitalist” who is too arrogant to release his tax returns running on a Bush/Cheney platform. In the words of Romney’s wife, “…you got all you need to know,” this after one year worth of taxes were partially released.  But it’s more than arrogance, Romney is quite possibly hiding the fact that he’s a billionaire. It’s likely that he has stretched he limits of ethical financial behavior and the tax laws. That the tax returns for certain years may well prove he has been lying about his involvement in Bain Capital from 1999 to 2002.

Moderate and Independent Americans of all persuasions have only one choice.  Give the current administration four more years and a clear majority in the house and senate. The economy will continue to improve. Employment will increase. The deficit will be reduced. College graduates will find jobs again. Teachers, firefighters, policemen and public sector workers will be able to do their work again. The war in Afghanistan will end. Our troops will come home. There will  not be another war like Iraq started in Iran. Veterans will get the kind of aid they need in all areas.  Social Security will not be destroyed. Medicare will not be turned into a voucher program. Students will not be dropped from their parents healthcare policies.

This country and working middle-class  does better when Democrats have control of the government. FDR brought the country out of a major depression, created jobs, and enacted Social Security. Under the Clinton Administration a surplus was created — there was no deficit until Bush/Cheney. President Obama has been systemically obstructed in his efforts to create jobs and move the economy by Republicans. Since 2010 the Republicans have had control of the House of Representative and have done nothing but obstruct progress. Republicans in lockstep have voted to repeal the Affordable Health Care act thirty-one times but have not created one stimulus bill for the economy.

The choice is clear move the country forward, save the American way of life or let the ultra conservative billionaires create a country with only two classes, the super rich and the poor.
